Are You A Sponsor or a Mentor?
By: Debbie Smith
WAHM-Online.com Webmaster
When you introduce someone into your "Opportunity of the Moment",
whether it be a brand-new start-up company, or a staple of the
Network Marketing or Direct Sales industry; what do you as the
sponsor, owe that person?
I get this question alot. It seems that it has become common place,
accepted even, to recruit someone and then leave them to discover
the ins and outs of the business themselves. You arm them with a
script, maybe a few leads, if they are lucky, and expect them to
know exactly what they are doing.
In my opinion, this is part of the reason that most
Work-at-Home-Moms jump from business to business, never spending
enough time doing one thing to really make a difference. We are
programmed to expect quick results and if we haven't made our target
amount in the first 2 weeks, we are off to the next big thing.
Honestly, if your sponsor can't seem to stay with something for more
than a few days, why would you keep following this person.
Believe me, I've had it done to me more times than I care to admit.
When I choose to join a company, it is generally not a quick
decision for me. I spend alot of time researching the company, their
mission, their products, etc. I have usually spent five to ten hours
on research before I spend a dime!
From what I've seen in the industry,
there are two kinds of people: There are the "Heavy Hitters"
who seem to sponsor thousands of people into an opportunity in a
very short time. I would question how much assistance you are
going to get from someone like that. They seem to prey on the
newbies, promising them lots of money and success and then turning
their backs on them once they've signed up. I've seen and
heard the horror stories over and over again. The second type
of person I've found are those who may not sponsor thousands, but
they are what I consider a "mentor". They teach you what you
need to know to become successful, and those are the people who are
with the same company for 3, 4, 5 years and more. They put
much more into their business and therefore, get much more out of
it!!
